[365 Days of Extraordinary] Day 58 Transcript: The Work In Everyday Life

Hola. So a few years ago, I became a certified passion test facilitator and you’ve heard me talk about that. I think it’s a really, really powerful tool and I go back to it quite often, and I use it with all my clients. Love it, love it, love, love, love it. Thank you to the passion test.

One of the things we learnt in that facilitation process is a thing called The Work by Byron Katie. Now if you haven’t heard about who Byron Katie is, you can go to thework.com and you can read all about her, but I’ll give you a bit of a gist and then I’ll talk about why I think it’s such a great tool.

So Byron Katie suffered from … hola, incredible depression. It’s very, very deep story about her life, getting to where she got to the point where she created The Work. Bottom line is, at one point she was lying in a halfway house where she had sent herself because of all these issues.

A cockroach crawled over her and I might … This is artistic liberation here. I may not have the story exactly correct, but you get the general gist. So the cockroach crawled across her and all of a sudden she kind of realized that prior to the cockroach walking across her, her life was such and then it was something had changed but it was all about her thoughts. So it was, and this whole work process started about what we’re actually thinking and is it real? Is it not real? How do we know it is? And pretty much once she came up with this, her depression kind of lifted and she was happy and she went home and she had this resurrected a relationship with her family and her life changed dramatically and she created this process called The Work.

Now I use The Work not religiously and that I sit down with a piece of paper and do the exercises, but I do it in terms of what we call a turnaround, all the time. I did it twice a day in situations. One person when I, one moment where I thought someone was really angry with me, they haven’t said anything to say they were really angry with me, “Samantha I’m angry with you”. It was a tone, it was the way they spoke to me that had me feel they were angry with me. So I’d go through The Work in seconds in my brain and I’ll step you through it now about how do I know it’s true. Is it true? Who am I the person with that while I’m thinking that thought? And then I flip it and go, “I’ve got no idea if they’re angry with me. That’s my shit cause I thought that so over it. Move on.”

Pinterest - Life is simple. Everything happens for you, not to you. Everything happens at exactly the right moment, neither too soon nor too late. You don't have to like it - Samantha LeithSo I wanted to step through with you how to do that and you can go to the work.com as I said and you can download this worksheet. It’s called a Judge Your Neighbor worksheet. And you can go through situations in your past. You can go through situations as they happen. And I think it’s actually a good exercise to sit down and go through couple of really poignant things in your life. It can be really powerful. I remember the first time we did it in our facilitation, I was like bawling. I was like, “Oh God.” Cause I was like, “Oh my God, I’ve always thought this was something.” And by the time I’d done this I was like, “Oh no, I actually just thought it was something. I have no idea. That is actually fact. So I need to, I will let go of that thought and flip it around to maybe having a different meaning.”

And then the other one you want to download on The Work as well is a worksheet called One Belief Worksheet, which is a quick way of, as I said, flipping things around. Okay, turn around. They’re called turnarounds. So let’s go to this situation today where I thought someone was angry with me. So Angie, you know all about The Work. So did I know that this person was angry with me? Hmm, no, I didn’t know this person was angry with me. I felt that they were angry with me. So the next point of it is, can I absolutely know that it’s true? And the answer is no. So I had to go to number three.

Yeah, it’s just, we think these things and once you start realizing that all, and I’m not talking about depression here, so clinical depression is a completely different kettle of fish. And there’s, I believe if you have a clinical depression, psychiatry and therapy, the way to go, possibly medication for many, many people and there’s no stigma with that at all from anybody or there shouldn’t be and if there is, send them to me and I’ll get grumpy with them. Why am I doing a Wiggles thing when saying that. Anyway, but if it’s just a moment where you’re reacting to something, it’s all in here. It’s all in our thought process. So if you get a tool like The Work where you ask yourself these series of questions and you can flip it in seconds and come out of that situation going, “oh, okay, yeah, no, I don’t know that.

And you can do it in the positive as well. “How do I know they really have the hots for me? Well, I don’t really know they have the hots for me. Where would I be if they did? I’d be having fun. So it’s not always negative. You can do it in a positive when you kind of … because we make believe in our minds, Our minds are like the greatest play playpen in the world. We can cop stories. Everybody by nature is creative. So there’s all the stuff going on and honestly, so much of it’s just crap. It’s not true. We’ve concocted these stories and little mini lies about our lives and about what we thought of a situation or what we thought someone felt of us or you know, “oh my God, that waiter looked at me the wrong way.” And by the end of the day, we’ve sat with the thought that the waiter looked at us the wrong way so many times that by the time we go home we go, “oh my God, I must’ve looked really ugly today cause the waiter looked at me the wrong way. So, Oh, I’ve got to get to the gym, I’ve got to do something. Cause I’m obviously really ugly.” The waiter may have just been having a bad day. Okay. But our minds just go.

So let’s go back to my situation today because it’s all about me. What’s not? But I’m trying to give you guys tools that I find really, really, really, really useful. So do I know that it’s true? No, I don’t know it’s true. So how did I react? Or what when it happened or what did I believe in that thought? So in that thought, I thought this person was angry with me, which then made me feel like a bad person or that I’d done something wrong. I’d let them down, I disappointed them. I’d been stupid. I hadn’t done something I was meant to do and I got cold.

I have quite physical reactions when I’m feeling things. So in that instance it’s like life just goes bang. “Oh my God, I’m terrible.” And then like “oh”, and then in the seconds I go, “oh, hang on, they actually haven’t said, Samantha, I’m angry with you. I have thought that in my mind.” So who would I be in that second if I wasn’t thinking that? Well if I wasn’t thinking that in that moment I’d be the same Sam that had an awesome day and is pretty confident that she’d done everything that was expected of her today for her clients, her family and her friends and turned up where and when I needed to be and got stuff done. So I’d be feeling pretty good myself. Launch the confidence challenge, stuff’s going well. If I didn’t think this thought that, “oh my God, they’re angry with me so therefore I’m a terrible person cause I let them down.”

And then I can turn it around. So the possible turnarounds you have she, he, she’s angry with me so I could turn it around and go, “I’m angry with me.” Could turn it around that way or I could turn it around and go, “I’m angry with them” or I could do an opposite flip. Okay. They’re not angry with me, I’m not angry with them. I can flip it that way. And when you’re flipping it, find specific examples of when in that with that person, and you don’t always have to do this. So I didn’t need to do this today. I could flip it really quickly just by asking myself the first couple of questions. But when you are sitting down, going through bigger moments or things in your past that you want to dig into and turn it around, for each thought, come up with a couple of things. So actually I’ll grab a One Belief worksheet and get what they’re one is. Should we stick to my example? Okay, I’ve got a One worksheet.

I’ll stick to stick with the angry example. So for example, they shouldn’t be angry with me and I’d turn around with them and go in my head. You don’t say this to people, by the way, you don’t go to someone and go, “I’ve just turned around my thought and you shouldn’t be angry with me.” That’s not what you do, okay. That’s not what you do. You can turn it on and go, well they shouldn’t be angry with me. I shouldn’t be angry with me. I shouldn’t be angry with them. And you find little places where little situations where you can point that to and you keep and make it, make it real. Like don’t come up with something really, really lofty cause that just won’t make sense to you and it won’t snap you out of that thought, okay. So I could snap this thought around today by turning it into, “I was angry with me because I automatically thought I’d done wrong.” So, and then that thought, yeah I felt bad about myself for a second, but I also then I could flip it around and go, “well no, I actually haven’t done anything wrong.” So it’s cleared, it’s gone. That person’s actually no longer involved because I’ve done the flip in my head.

So the first question you’ve got to ask yourself in any of these situations is, is it true? If you go, “yeah, it is true. They’re angry with me cause I said I’m angry with you.” Do you absolutely know that it’s true? Yes or no? Again, if they say point blank something, well you kind of got to go. That’s their truth. Still may not actually be true for you because they may have their own stuff going on and this is … when you’re doing this process. As I say, I can do it really, really quickly and flip it in my head. You can write it out. You can do it with your coach, you can do it me for example, you can do it with another coach. But when you go through the process of how that thought is making you feel and what you who you could be if you weren’t thinking that, that’s where the power is. That truly is where the power is because in a second we can take our response to a situation and it completely fuck us for a day or two or three or four or five or six.

It can be something in your past and all of a sudden you think about it and it paralyzes you. Chances are the other person involved in that situation doesn’t even know because you’ve got the story in your head of what was happening in that situation. It’s not what was going on in that situation for them. So the whole point of this tool is to turn it around for ourselves so we feel better.

Now I’m going to wind up here cause it’s such a good tool. And, while I do this all the time and I use it as a tool and I do it with my clients. I’m not a teacher of the work. And in the Passion test, we use it as a tool. So I do it in that regard, but I’m not a teacher of this tool so I would love it if you went to the work.com and had a bit of a read. Watch some videos, grab her book. I think Byron Katie is an incredibly gifted woman and she’s actually got a great podcast with Lewis Howes that she did that you could just have a Google podcast Lewis Howes, Byron Katie, have a listen to that, that’s really good. Download the sheets. Flick me any questions if you like.

For anyone yesterday that wanted the Wheel of Life assignment, that will be coming out to you tonight or tomorrow, just got to make up a couple more tweaks.

And I hope you’re all signing up for the confidence challenge. So excited. So you can go to W-W-W, seven as in the number seven. Which way should I do at number 7dayconfidencechallenge.com, and you can join me for seven days. It’s totally free. It’s just some fun stuff to do every day to help you build your confidence because I believe we can all build it. Like we can all build it, it’s a muscle, keep it going and it’s the stuff we do every single day that helps us build that. So there’s a challenge for you if you want, otherwise go to thework.com and download the sheets and just deal with some of that crap that is festering in your mind about how you believed a certain situation happened. Cause chances are once you’ve gone through The Work, you will know like absolutely 100% know that it wasn’t true in that moment. You just made it true and we don’t want to do that. Okay, have a great night and I’ll see you all tomorrow.

[365 Days of Extraordinary] Day 57 Transcript: Wheel Of Life Exercise

Hi. So, it’s not the morning. My day didn’t quite go to plan, but that’s okay. I’m still getting into when I’m awake and alert. Today, I wanted to go through my wheel of life exercise with you, because a few people have reached out to me and said, “Oh, where can I get the wheel of life?” And then, I realized that the link on my website is broken. So, we are fixing that up, because I need to update it to 2019 copyright, et cetera. But, I want to step you through it, and I’m going to suggest that if you watch this live and you’re interested in it, comment or send me a message, and I will send you the wheel of life exercise and some tips to go through for you. So, you probably all heard about a wheel of life exercise and you’re probably going to go, “Ooh, wheel of life exercise. Yeah, yeah. It’s all buggered or yeah, what do you want me to fix? Yeah, yeah”

That lingo that we do. Ignore all that and actually listen to me for this wheel of life exercise. Okay, just listen. So, I’m going to talk about it briefly here, but as I said, send me a message or comment below and I will send you the PDF when I update it later tonight or tomorrow. I don’t like the colors, so I’m going to change it. I know that’s really daggy, but that’s me. Okay. So, if you going to do a wheel of life exercise, the whole point is that a wheel is round, that doesn’t look very round, and a wheel goes round and smoothly. But, most of us in our lives get a bit odd shaped and the wheel doesn’t go smoothly. So, the metaphor is we want everything in our life to be nice and even, so the cogs turn nice and smoothly.

So, the areas that we look at are family and friends. Let’s start with that one, that’s a nice one. Romance and sex, I like to put sex in it, because we don’t talk about it enough and we should. Okay, it’s not just about the romance, personal growth, personal development, personal favorite, fun and recreation, big one. Your physical environment has so much to do with how you’re feeling, and what you’re doing as well. So, that’s one we’ve got to look at, your business and career, because not everyone has a business, some people have a career and for some people their work life is actually being a stay-at-home full time parent, and Oh my God, hats off to you because I reckon that’s probably one of the hardest jobs in the world. So I’d put that in that category as well. We talk about finances, it’s a big one.

Pinterest - Too much of one thing can end up creating stress; this is something that no one needs in their life. But living a life in balance can provide harmony and peace - Samantha LeithYour health is a really big one as well. So there’s lots of different areas. Now things like contribution, I put in things like personal growth, because I feel like the contribution that you make to others, either through charity or through charitable work or your community, like a church or something. I think that’s part of your personal development thing. So, I’ll just run by a couple of questions for you on each one. So, family and friends. So, I’ll take a back step, the idea is with the wheel of life that you mark on the wheel on a scale of zero to 10, zero being crap and 10 being fan fucken tastic, where you are on that particular part of your life. And then, you look at how you can improve your life in those areas to get that score closer to a 10, that’s what we’re aiming for.

We’re aiming for… I would be, no, take back. I am really happy right now in this moment. Would my life be better if everything in my wheel of life was an eight or nine? Yeah, absolutely. But, that doesn’t stop me from being really happy with how everything is now. Okay, I’m putting energy where I need to put it, which means some of them aren’t quite, it’s not quite as smooth wheel. So family and friends, they’re the people you enjoy hanging out with. Yes! Sometimes you need to hang out with family and friends that you don’t really particularly enjoy hanging out with, so you need to put up some boundaries on that to protect yourself. But, they are a key part of life. Romance, sex, that thing. If you’re single, even just getting on an app, like a friend of mine recently and having a swipe and a bit of a look can really spark you up.

That can be enough to up the number in that component. If you’re in a relationship, are you going on date nights? If your in a relationship, how good is your sex life? Are you both making an effort in it? Do you need to spice things up a bit? What number would you give yourself at this moment? Personal growth, me big one. If you’re not growing personally. Yeah, keep growing. We never, ever stop growing in this area. So it’s about reading, seminars, what matters to you most? The meditating. Are you mindfully practicing gratitude? Do you love accept and appreciate yourself exactly as you are? As I said, I’m really happy at the moment. Yeah, things can improve, but when you’re working on your personal growth, you can be really happy with what you’ve got right now even though you’re trying to improve it.

Fun and recreation. I personally am not scheduling enough of this at the moment, so I need to work on it. But, it’s for everyone. Fun and recreation is different, for some of us it’s 11 o’clock at a nightclub, for other people it’s around of golf, for other people it’s about backyard barbecue, for other people it might be going to the movies. There’s so many things that can fit into that category, but you’ve got to do it. Especially when we have our own businesses, that’s one of the big ones that can completely fall apart and it gets us out of kilter and we’re not happy chappies, okay, so work on it. Your physical environment, I’m a stickler for this one. I like lots of light, I like color, but I like clean surfaces, which is ironic given the mess of my bookcase behind me.

Look around the rest of my house, there’re clean surfaces. For example, I used to live in a doc terrace house, and I just get really down, and miserable, and sick all the time. And I think it was just because I didn’t have light. My house is full of glass, it’s light. If you are working at a desk job but you prefer being outside, where can you fit in some time to get out and get some fresh air every single day? Is your desk the best possible desk it can be if you’re stuck at it, it’s really important, make it yours, make it beautiful. Your business and career, how’s it going? What are you working on? Could you grow further? Do you need to look for a new job? Are you fulfilled? Could you educate yourself on something else in that area to improve it?

Could you mentor somebody within that? Because, giving in that environment actually makes you feel better. So, if you’re in a job somewhere, can you men mentor someone coming up below you? It sounds a bit rude, doesn’t it? Could you mentor someone and help them in their career and that will help. Oh my gosh, that will absolutely lift that level on that component of your wheel of life if you’re giving back a bit more of that, have a look through your [LinkedIn 00:06:58] Profile. Can you up it a little bit? Just actually looking at your LinkedIn profile and knowing exactly what you’ve done and where you’re at can make you feel so much better. And again, up that number. Finances, who’s happy with their finances, I’m not happy with mine at the moment. So, I’ve got to work on that. Do you have enough superannuation?

Are you financially aware? Are you spending wisely? Are you following a budget? Is there more month left in your month than there is money in your month. That’s a deadly one for most of us, you have bad debt. Finances is a tough one, because it’s a tough one to be really honest with yourself on. So employ you when you do this exercise and you’re looking at finances, be really honest. Otherwise, there’s no point there’s really not, we can fake everything, but the bottom-line is what’s in the bank, what bills you can pay. So, don’t lie to yourself on that one. Yeah. Samantha, don’t lie to yourself on that one. Health, are you working on your health? Are you healthy? Are you eating sick? Are you exercising? Do you need to take vitamins? When was the last time you had a full blood work?

It’s the number of people that have been helped or saved, because they had regular, just a regular GP visit. Just check me, let me know what’s going on. And if something was elevated so they’ve got to check it out and it really helps them. So, don’t take your health for granted. If you’re a member of a private health fund, make the most of every single dollar. Get your eyes tested, get your ears done, your eyes done. Get your checkups, go to the chiropractor, go to the physio, massage, whatever you can claim. Make the most of it, if you’re paying it. Otherwise, what’s the point? But, you should be taking some time everyday to acknowledge how your health is, and improve it. It’s not many people who don’t need their health improving. So if you message me, I’ll send you the whole exercise so you can actually sit down and do it.

It takes about 10 or 15 minutes, and then you can work out where you want to go and what you need to improve on. Otherwise, just to look at those core areas, sit down for 10 minutes, and look at them and see, what do you need to do? Excellent, Jerry. That’s good, I’m sure you will be fine, but it’s really important to get done. I was a couple of months ago and I’ll go back again at Christmas, especially with health stuff that’s been in my family. I want to check out if I’m all right. Okay, so remember the categories, family and friends, romance and sex, personal growth, fun and recreation, physical environment, business and career, finances and health. Okay. How are you going on all of them? What do you need… Be honest. What do you need to do to improve those areas? Okay, I’d love to help your alright. So send me a message or comment below, and we’ll get that exercise to you and you can do it and have a great night.
