Hey everybody! Happy Mardi Gras! Do you know, many, many, many, many moons ago, I recorded the very first theme song for the televised Mardi Gras Parades. And it was a song called, “Happy Mardi Gras”. Ironic, really. “Happy Mardi, Mardi Gras…” I love tonight. It’s about fun, and festivity, and people, and love, and color, and movement, and all sorts of things. And as someone who just got off a plane from New Zealand… As you know, I’ve been there for a funeral, I’m shatteredly tired, like so tired. I had a couple of things I wanted to talk about tonight. I’m like, “My brain actually can’t [inaudible 00:00:43] enough. I can’t do that tonight.” So I thought, “I’ll go back to the Samantha Leith Manifesto, which is on the wall there, as you can see. But you’re probably looking at that backwards. And do one of those topics.

Because they’re dear to my heart, I believe them wholeheartedly. So I don’t need to sit there and give you the 10 tips. So I wanted to talk about how focus, F-O-C-U-S focus, which if you spell it out is, “Follow One Course Until Successful.” And that may seem really simple, but for many of us, it’s not that simple. We get distracted, we do all sorts of things. But the reality is, you can’t be successful if you’re chasing the mirror ball. Like really, if this mirror ball’s going like this and you’re like, “Oh, bright shiny object, I’m following the mirror ball. I’m following the mirror ball.”

Pinterest -- The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus - Samantha LeithYou were going to be following the light, wherever it goes, and not actually get to where you want to go. Now don’t get me wrong. I really love mirror balls. I have them in my house. I can just put my hand on a mirror ball. I passionately, passionately love mirror balls. In fact, I think I need a dress made out of a mirror ball. Anyone want to design that for me? But they cannot be the beacon of light that you follow. They really can’t. You have to… To get to where you want to go, you can only have one destination. Now it’s okay to change your destination along the way. So it’s okay to go, “Going to be a lawyer, going to be a lawyer, do do do do do do do do, follow the law track, follow the law track, follow the law track. Oh, actually, I think I’d prefer to teach law. Follow that track, follow that track, follow that track, follow that track.”

But you’re not going to get to where you want to go, if you wake up one day and you’re like, “I’m so going to be a nurse.” And then the next day you think you want to be a forex trader. And the day after that, the mirror ball’s come along and you want to be a clothing designer. And it’s different to having passions in those areas and dipping your toes in, and having those passions as part of your life. That’s very, very different. And I wholeheartedly believe, and you know I do, that it’s really, really good to have those kind of passions fill up your cup and be part of who you are, whether it’s design, or singing, or speaking, or reading, or writing, or whatever they are.

Going to other countries and building schools or teaching, volunteer work, anything. That passion work is so important. But if you have an ultimate goal in business or in life, you need to focus on that one thing. And it’s a challenge. It’s most certainly a challenge for me. And it’s not just because I’m a Gemini. It is actually just a challenge, because I see the mirror ball and I want to chase the mirror ball. So my challenge for you tonight, if you’re not under a mirror ball dancing, singing Happy Mardi Gras, I want you to think about what that one destination is that you really want, and try and stop following the bright, shiny objects. Because those bright, shiny objects, while they’re going to give you a rush of endorphins and dopamine and all those exciting, magical things that make you feel good, they’re not going to help you get to where you want to go. They’re not. Sorry. Sorry to break it to you. So look at where you want to focus on, and concentrate on that.
